Il y a vingt-sept ans, John Lennon était assassiné à New York. C’est donc l’occasion de se souvenir de cette chanson de John Lennon moins célèbre que celle de U2 qu’il publia sur son album le plus politisé, Some time in New York City. Le disque parut le 12 juin 1972, soit quatre jours avant que John Johnson, la quatorzième victime du Bloody Sunday du 30 janvier de la même année, ne décèdât des suites de ses blessures. Les paroles écrites par un artiste plus souvent célébré pour son pacifisme sont particulièrement virulentes, et n’aidèrent pas à le réconcilier avec sa terre natale : Put the english back to sea ! Le second prénom de Lennon, Winston, lui fut donné en hommage à Churchill, car il naquit durant un raid des bombardiers allemands durant la seconde guère mondiale. Ce fardeau ne devait guère peser sur ses opinions politiques.
